Playing as a shadow priest in WoW is a pretty sweet deal. To begin with, they’re the quickest and best solo spec out of all the game’s healing classes. Really though, their biggest asset is how much they add to a group. I know, you can level from 1 to 80 without ever setting foot in an instance or grouping up at all, especially if you’re following a priest leveling guide to the letter. If you’re really looking to see what your shadow priest can do, you want to start hitting up some instances in Outland or Northrend.

The area where shadow priests really outshine the other DPS classes and specs is versatility. For example, shadow priests have the easiest time of switching to backup healing since all they need to do is drop out of shadow form – dual spec is purely an extra. If the priest is geared decently, they may even be able to main heal effectively.

Priests are the only healing class that is able to maintain this degree of versatility while utilizing their DPS talents. The reason for this is that a shadow priest uses very similar gear to a holy or discipline priest, so there is no need for them to carry around a second set of gear for healing. The more melee-oriented hybrids lack this inherent versatility since their primary sets will be focused on stats which are the polar opposite of what they would need for healing. Furthermore, most players will not take the time or effort to even compile a healing set, and quite often if they do, it will end up left in the bank when it’s needed most. Neglecting the healing aspect of a hybrid class doesn’t make any sense to me, especially considering that you can go on the wow auction house and put together a decent healing set for under 100 gold on most servers. I guess some players just don’t care about playing to the potential of their class.

Utility is another area in which priests surpass other DPSers. Because of talents like Vampiric Embrace and Vampiric Touch, priests heal and restore their group’s mana even when they are DPSing in shadow form. None of the other DPS classes can lay claim to that level of utility. While shadow priests may lag behind the true DPS classes like rogues and mages in terms of raw damage output, they make up for it by providing a sort of safety net for the group. If you’re ever wondering what class to level and you want to solo well without giving up your group viability, give shadow priest a try.
